League of Legends Coach Peter Dun Announces Break for Parenthood

League of Legends Coach Peter Dun Announces Break for Parenthood

Peter Dun, the head coach for Team Heretics in the League of Legends European Championship (LEC), has announced his decision to take an indefinite break from coaching.

The announcement comes as Dun prepares for a new chapter in his life—parenthood.

Balancing Coaching with Parenthood

Dun has been a prominent figure in the League of Legends scene, with a coaching career that includes successful tenures at teams like Intz, Splyce, Mad Lions, and Evil Geniuses. Known for his deep analytical approach and commitment to the game, Dun typically spent over 110 hours per week during the competitive seasons analyzing gameplay and strategies. However, the impending responsibilities of fatherhood have led him to reassess this demanding schedule.

“As someone who doesn’t play League of Legends and has compensated for years by fully committing to the study of the game, the 110 hours a week I normally commit to the game in season is not sustainable with parenthood,” Dun explained.

He highlighted the challenges of reducing his work hours, which even at 90 hours per week during the Spring Split, felt unsustainable for maintaining his high standards.

Peter Dun’s decision has been met with support from Team Heretics, reflecting the organization’s understanding and accommodating stance towards work-life balance.

Dun is committed to continuing his role through the Summer Split and until the end of his current contract, focusing on preparing Team Heretics for a strong performance at the 2024 Worlds.

In his announcement, Dun also expressed gratitude towards his partner, who has supported him throughout his esports career. His decision is not only a step back from his professional life but also a move to be a supportive husband and father.

“As for what’s next, I’m not sure. I have a half-finished PhD and some football coaching badges that are calling me to complete. But my main focus right now is on how to best help Team Heretics get to Worlds, and then to be the best supportive husband and father I can be,” Dun shared.

Peter Dun’s departure marks a poignant moment in esports, highlighting the personal sacrifices behind the scenes of professional gaming.

His choice to prioritize family over career sets a powerful example for the community, emphasizing the importance of balance and well-being in the highly competitive esports industry.
